COMPARE THE FINISHES

Black or another finish?

How black compares with the finishes people usually look at next, and what it’s like to live with.

Black or gunmetal?

Brushed gunmetal is a deep grey with a metallic sheen, softer than black and better at hiding water marks. Black is the bolder choice. See gunmetal.

Black or brass?

Black is graphic and cool; antique and brushed brass are warm. In a room of white tiles and timber, black reads modern and brass reads softer. See brushed brass.

Looking after it

Wipe it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry it. Acid, chlorine and abrasive cleaners damage any finish, and that damage isn’t covered by the 3-year finish warranty.

Matching the whole room

Every design comes in matte black, so the basin tap, shower, waste, towel rail and door handle can all match. The Valencia and Capri mirror frames come in matte black too.

Matte Black questions

Black tapware kitchen: what are the downsides?

Water marks and limescale show more on black than on a brushed finish, so dry the tap after use if your water is hard. Clean it gently; abrasives leave shiny patches.

Are black taps hard to clean?

Not if you clean them gently: warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry. Acid, chlorine and abrasive cleaners damage the finish and aren't covered by the 3-year finish warranty.

Will a black door handle fit my door?

The Santorini lever suits doors 30–42 mm thick with a 60 mm backset, which covers most interior doors. Measure yours before ordering.

Black or brushed gunmetal?

Black is flat and solid, the strongest contrast against white. Gunmetal is a deep grey with a brushed sheen and hides water marks better.

Can I get my whole bathroom in black?

Yes: every design comes in it, including drains, towel rails, shower screen hardware and door hardware.

A black door handle to match your black taps

If the taps are black, a black door handle on the bathroom door finishes the job, and ours come from the same range. All 24 of our designs are made in a flat matte black, our strongest contrast against white or pale tiles, so the basin tap, shower, drain, towel rail and door lever share one shade.

Black door lever handles and the lock

The Santorini lever has Ø53.5 mm roses and suits doors 30 to 42 mm thick with a 60 mm backset; the Prague privacy lock suits the same doors, and the Venezia butt hinge (102 × 76 × 3 mm, sold individually) matches both. All are 304 stainless steel.

Black door handles through the house

Black door handles stand out on white or pale doors and almost disappear on dark-stained timber, so think about the door colour as well as the taps. Carrying one finish through every interior door is simplest when the handle, lock and hinge come from the same range.

Black bathroom tap options

For a basin in the bench, the Vienna Short leaves 75 mm under the spout; for a vessel basin, the Vienna Tall leaves 200 mm. On the wall, the Milano wall mixer and spout set need 45 to 70 mm of wall depth. In the kitchen, the Como and Porto both fit a Ø35 mm hole.

Black shower head and screen fittings

The Lyon and Bordeaux carry a 250 mm black shower head from the ceiling or the wall, and the Corsica adds a hand shower on a rail. On the glass, the Geneva and Rennes hinges and the Rhodes clamp suit 8 to 12 mm toughened glass, and the Corfu knobs finish the door.

Keeping black looking black

Abrasive pads, cream cleaners and bleach polish or strip a matte surface and leave shiny patches, so use warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then dry it. Water marks show more on black than on brushed gunmetal, so drying matters more if your water is hard, and a quick wipe after use keeps it even. Caring for tapware finishes has the full list.

Every product here has the same cover: 15 years on the body, 7 years on cartridges, valves and moving parts, 3 years on the finish and 2 years on washers, seals and O-rings (tapware warranty). Taps and showers must be installed by a licensed plumber, to the NZ Building Code (G12), for the warranty to apply.
